I will tell you a story about my first tornado. It is one of the oddest and surreal moments of my childhood and I remember it SO CLEARLY.

When I was in kindergarten we had a tornado coming across Ray Hubbard and my parents’ house was right on the shore and I’m fuckin’ scared dog. The house is shaking, shit’s rumbling our ears are popping and I’m crying like SCREAMING for my life and throwing up in the toilet. Baby sis is asleep. Dog is just “._.” Mom’s just >_>.

And my dad, like, trying to be light-hearted but not like, LYING that we might be in danger was like “well if we all go we’ll all go together!”

AND I LOOK DAD RIGHT IN THE FACE

“YEAH BUT YOU’RE OLD” (I am 5 years old)

And my dad immediately starts HOWLING WITH LAUGHTER. Eyes screwed shut like OH MY GOD HELP I CAN’T BREATHE.

AND I’M JUST CRYING BITTER LITTLE GIRL TEARS AND VOMITING ON MYSELF AND HE’S LAUGHING HIS ASS OFF AND THE WINDOWS ARE CRACKING AND I CAN HEAR IT.

And this goes on for like 7 straight minutes until it was over.

We have that blase attitude here too. Or rather it’s oddly half and half. I always take shelter even though I’ve grown up in the environment, but there’s loads of people who go to the roof of my office building to watch these storms too.

an F0 (more like several) took out half a cabinetry shop and levelled an abandoned gas station, injured people, took out some trailer homes, and left a huge debris field within two miles of my house.

That was a lil’ pussy-ass F0 that did that. It literally looked like the iron giant took a big bite out of that steel building.

That’s why everyone really needs basements or a shelter which is hard to do and costly…all the new buildings I see built around here…I really wonder how many have basements if any. It’s a scary thought and I’m right on the Kansas/Missouri border.

I mean it would add to the total price of a home but you’d think in at-risk areas some kind of shelter would be a basic item in the package like a second bathroom or something.

It’s crazy. This happened a fifteen minute’s drive from me. A big problem is the attitude we Oklahoman’s have about tornados. Like it’s part of our culture to go out barefooted and watch the damn thing so we don’t take it seriously.

Yeah same in Texas. The storm missed us but people were still out shopping at Target with several watches in effect and a busy radar. When I was living in Denton (Denton gets most of the bad weather since it’s so close to the OK border) there was a Tornado watch that turned into a warning and there were obvious black and green clouds for about an hour or longer before and there were people just jogging in full gear and walking their dogs while this siren was going off, not even rushing.

Safety and having money really go hand and hand. *sighs* The last building I live in at my college town might have been one of the oldest buildings in town but at least it had a cellar. All these cheap buildings with no basements anymore UGH.

What really floors me about the pictures I’m looking at is y’know in a typical tornado outbreak you might have a wall to a brick/stone house(s) or building(s) fall down or an entire roofs ripped off and cars flipped over, but these concrete structures are just….gone GONE.

That’s what I’m terrified of too. My roommate and I live in half of a duplex with no basement. I really need to find out where we could go for shelter, but I’d have to abandon my cat and who knows if we’d make it in time.

The storm shelter business is booming here in Texas, but they’re too expensive for the average family (though in a good economy I think the price is pretty damn reasonable, around $2500.) People just can’t throw that much at a shelter “just in case” even though it might be the only way to survive shit like that.

I know of one family down the road that has one but that’s it. Its really hard to dig out basements here because the ground is this really hard, thick black clay.

I think it’s tied between pain relief and flexibility. But the flexibility prevents the pain in the first place so that can be lumped together.

And it isn’t JUST pain relief the pain is replaced by a drug-like euphoria if I hit the right spots correctly for a good period of time. That euphoria is what makes you keep doing it. Yoga literally has a drug-like effect on me.

Like, it is entirely possible for me to get hit by a tornado without warning before a chaser can spot it because I’m so rural I wouldn’t have a snowball’s chance in hell because I live in a box on wheels.

I could like, run to the house I guess but I’d actually have to get inside the house first.

Plus they go up into the sky and play dead then come back down, that’s the only reason why that one didn’t rip across our property last year.
